BEAUTY is not loveliness, grace, or pleasurable sights, though any of those might certainly be part of it. For the writer out to evoke the texture of experience, beauty is simply accuracy, to come as close as we can to what seems to be the real. As Galway Kinnell writes, in perhaps the only sentence in English where the same verb repeats three times in a row and still makes sublime sense: “Whatever what is is is what I want.”

Or as Susan Howe puts it, precisely:

because beauty is what is
